FSM - Frequency Specific Microcurrent

What is frequency specific microcurrent?

This is a therapy in which the doctor/therapist treats you by using specific microcurrent frequencies applied with graphite gloves or electrodes (like EKG leads) for the purpose of effectively treating muscular and neurological pain. Microcurrent is a physical therapy modality that has been in use for over 15 years. Microcurrent is current in millionths of an amp. By comparison, a TENS unit and most other electro-therapies produce milliamps, which are 1000 times greater than a microamp. Your own cells make current in microamps. Your body seems to use microcurrent energy to increase its own energy production. Microcurrent increases the production of ATP, the chemical form of energy in the body, by up to 500%. It also increases protein synthesis and waste product removal. The current is so low it does not stimulate sensory nerves so you will not feel anything.

How do the frequencies work?

The frequencies work on the principle of biologic resonance. A singer can shatter a glass when the note resonates with the crystal structure of the glass. Microcurrent frequencies seem to be able to resonate with biologic tissue when the frequency is correct. Once the tissue is changed and stable, it seems to be able to stay in the new configuration with proper nutritional support. Animal research confirms that the frequency to reduce inflammation reduced inflammation by 62% in a mouse model. Prescription drugs reduce inflammation by 45% in the same mouse research.

How many treatments are required and how often?

Although patients have had permanent changes in one treatment, the average number of treatments depends on the complexity of the problem. The treatments are generally four to seven days apart.

Do the benefits last?

Every patient responds individually but the changes to the muscles seem to be long lasting. About 60-80% of the changes created in one treatment last until the next treatment. Your muscles are used to being the way they are and may return to the old configuration if not treated again. We suggest nutritional support tailored to your condition to help create lasting change.

What is the cost of treatment? Does insurance cover?

The first treatment you may see the doctor and get therapy or just get therapy, depending on the doctor. Our office asks for payment the day services are rendered. The doctor’s office visit is insurance eligible. The therapy itself is not covered by insurance. Subsequent treatments consist of therapy only and the cost is the same as the therapy cost above. The amount of time the therapy takes will vary depending on need.

Why does the doctor/therapist use black graphite/vinyl gloves?

The graphite gloves conduct the frequencies from the machine to your body. The gloves allow the doctor/therapist to feel your muscles and put the treatment exactly where it is needed. We believe the shape of the gloves makes them a more effective and flexible way of delivering the current to the muscles, nerves and other tissues or organs. When the current needs to go to a large area, the gloves may be wrapped in a small, warm, wet towel for better conductivity.

Why does the doctor/therapist change the frequencies on the machine?

Specific frequencies seem to do specific things to the muscles and other tissues. We can’t be certain exactly what the frequencies are doing because we haven’t done any biopsies but the tissue will suddenly soften and become less painful when a “correct” frequency is chosen. This softening and the pain relief that comes with it, seems to be long lasting and in many cases permanent. Your doctor or therapist may use frequencies that are thought to be good for your whole system and not just the muscles.

Is there any risk?

There is no record of any permanent harm being done to anyone treated with Frequency Specific Microcurrent. The current should not be used through the brain or during pregnancy. If you have a spinal cord injury or a disc bulge pressing on your spinal cord, be sure to tell your doctor/therapist. Patients with pressure on the cord seem to have the normal side effects of treatment greatly magnified. Be sure to tell your doctor/therapist if your reaction is very severe. All of these reactions to treatment have been temporary.

Are there any side effects?

Resonance appears to change the muscle tissue, removing long stored waste products and increasing cellular metabolism so quickly that there maybe a detoxification reaction after treatment. Some people have a similar reaction after a massage but the reaction after microcurrent is stronger because we do so much in such a short period of time. The side effects can include nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, a temporary increase in pain or a flu-like feeling. The side effects usually start about 90 minutes after treatment and may last from 4 to 24 hours. Not everyone has side effects. Some people increase range of motion and physical activity so much that they have temporary symptoms in muscles and joints near the treated area.

What can I do about the side effects?

Your doctor/therapist may give you some supplements to help your liver detoxification pathways deal with the by-products from the muscles. You should drink at least two quarts of water in the two hours following muscle treatment. If you feel the side effects return, drink more water and take additional nutritional supplements and it should pass in about 20 minutes. Some treatment protocols do not produce a detox reaction.

NEUROMED

What is Neuromed?

Neuromed is advanced pain management treatment with electroanalgesic nerve blocks (ENB). ENB is a safe method of pain control that works well for certain types of chronic pain. The ENB machine generates high electrical frequency that interrupts or inhibits pain signals to the brain.

How does Neuromed compare with TENS or FSM?

TENS units reduce pain by applying low-voltage low frequency electricity with electrodes placed over the skin. ENB units use high frequency impulses to fatigue nerve fibers to block pain to the brain. FSM uses a variety of microcurrent frequencies at very low amperage (low intensity) and is beneficial for a wide range of conditions, of which pain is one.

Will Neuromed make my pain go away completely?

This is dependent on the source of the pain and its severity. The goal is to make the pain more manageable so that the patient can resume a more normal lifestyle. Most patients report a 50-70% decrease in pain after 3-5 treatments.

How often do I have to have the treatment?

This is highly individualized and partially dependent on being able to modify the source of the pain. Treatment protocols are usually recommended daily during the first week of treatment with emphasis on severe pain reduction. Once pain has been reduced, treatments are typically three times per week for the next two to three weeks with emphasis on continued pain reduction. After that, things become individualized based on need. The total number of treatments may be between 12-15. The physician should re-evaluate the patient after each five treatments.

What conditions can be helped with Neuromed?

Common conditions that can benefit from Neuromed therapy include back pain, post-surgical back pain, sciatica, nerve pain, complex regional pain syndrome, phantom limb and stump pain, peripheral neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia from shingles, peripheral ischemic pain due to peripheral vascular disease and many other types of pain as well. It can help relax muscle spasms. It can be beneficial in the management and symptomatic relief of chronic intractable pain, especially pain that has not responded to other modalities.

What is the cost of Neuromed? Is it covered by insurance?

It is covered by Medicare. All patients are responsible for charges the day services are rendered. Non-Medicare patients are responsible for filing for insurance coverage themselves. Preventive Medicine Group will file to Medicare and Medicare reimburses the patient. Patients need to check with their insurance as to potential reimbursement.

Who does the treatment? How long does it take?

Initially, the physician will determine what settings are appropriate and then the nurse does the actual treatment and subsequent treatments. Each treatment takes about 30-45 minutes.
